Witness Emotion without Judgment

I want to focus on something that I’ve known for a while but couldn’t always execute on.

So often, we have stuck emotions, usually negativity, that can get in the way of living the kind of life that we truly desire.

The practice I want to talk about is something that Eckhart Tolle touches on in his book, The Power of Now.

It’s the practice of witnessing – without judging – the emotions that we feel inside ourselves at any given time.

It seems so simple but in truth, that’s not always the case!

I say this because sometimes we just aren’t in a place to accept or “witness” our emotions.

I know this was the case for me.

For years, I held onto an almost unconscious set of beliefs about certain situations in life, about myself, other people, and so. These thoughts seemed to control me and created an exact match of my internal reality on the outside.

On top of that, this negative way of thinking also created physiological effects that affected my body, causing tension and posture issues due to chronic stressful thinking.

I knew the simple truth of witnessing thoughts and emotions objectively, but there were parts of me that I just couldn’t seem to allow myself to feel.

Well, I realized today the simplicity of Eckhart Tolle’s guidance and that in an instant, when I stop resisting and try just paying attention to what I feel – without judgment – I can begin to feel the tension in my body dissolve away.

This is what it’s all about: looking at the stuff that is holding us back, witness it without judging it. You’ll know it’s working when you feel your whole body relax and your mind let go and go blank in peace.

I believe this simple act of witnessing ourselves impartially can create a completely new way of being, and heal parts of ourselves that have been inflicting negativity on us so that we can step into our fullest selves.
